A man has been hacked to death in Mymensingh after a casual conversation took a deadly turn among a group of young people in the city.

The incident took place at Hamid Uddin Road around 10:45pm on Wednesday, according to Shafiqul Islam Khan, chief of Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station.

The victim was identified as Md Sajib, 20, son of Abul Kalam Azad. Sajib helped his father run a restaurant.

Police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue for an autopsy.

Sajib was having an informal chat with Monty, the son of Shafiq Mia, and a few others on Hamid Uddin Road, according to Shafiqul. During the conversation, Sajib addressed Monty as ‘tui’, a highly informal second-person pronoun in Bangla which can be construed as disrespectful or derogatory if used inappropriately.

“At one point, Monty grabbed a betel nut cutter from a shop and attacked Sajib with it. Locals rescued the injured Sajib and rushed him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors later declared him dead.”

Monty fled the scene after the incident and police are currently working to apprehend him.
