The National Citizen Party (NCP) has demanded a complete restructuring of the Election Commission (EC) and threatened to boycott the general election if their demands are ignored.
After staging a two-hour demonstration outside the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon on Wednesday, NCP leaders called for sweeping electoral reforms and warned that three key advisors—overseeing finance, education, and law—must resign if proposed changes are not implemented.
At the heart of the protest was Nasiruddin Patwari, the party’s chief coordinator, who accused the advisors of acting as “mouthpieces for the BNP” and undermining national interests.
He alleged that each has damaged their respective sectors through mismanagement and political bias.
ASIF NAZRUL TARGETED OVER “BETRAYAL”
Patwari reserved his strongest words for Law Advisor Asif Nazrul, accusing him of “betraying” the NCP by failing to deliver the promised ‘July Declaration’—a political commitment the party claims was crucial to electoral reform.
“If Asif Nazrul crosses us again, he will be forced out of the country,” Patwari declared during the rally. “We will not tolerate betrayal from those tasked with safeguarding national governance.”
The protest was first announced on Tuesday at an emergency press conference, where the NCP demanded that local elections be held before parliamentary polls and that the Election Commission be reconstituted without delay.
“If the commission is not restructured, the NCP will not participate in any election it organises,” Patwari said.
The demonstration ran from 11:30am to 2:00pm, drawing attention from both local media and security forces, though it concluded without incident.
The NCP’s escalation comes amid growing political tension in Bangladesh’s transitional governance phase, with reformist factions pushing back against entrenched structures and interim appointments.
