Two cases have been filed after “pirates” attempting to rob a freight ship in Shariatpur's Kirtinasha River were caught and beaten by a mob.
On Saturday, Sub-Inspector Alamgir Hossain of Palong Model Police Station filed the cases -- one for attempted robbery, and the other over illegal weapons, said Md Helal Uddin, chief of the police station.
Six suspected pirates injured in the mob beating have been named in the cases. Another seven to eight unidentified people have also been accused.
The mob beating took place on a bank of the Kirtinasha River in Shariatpur Sadar Upazila’s Tentulia on Friday.
According to police, locals infuriated by the robbery attempt caught the robbers as they attempted to flee and beat them. Five people were injured when the robbers retaliated by opening fire on the villagers.
One of the dead has been identified as Ebadul Bepari from Noria Upazila’s Kanorgaon.
As of now, three people have been killed in the incident, said the district's Superintendent of Police Nazrul Islam.
He said that one person died on the spot on Friday night while another died at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. Another person died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The five injured by gunfire are undergoing treatment at the Shariatpur Sadar Hospital under police protection.
A gang of robbers attempted to hijack a freight vessel on the Kirtinasha River in the Rajarchar area of Madaripur's Kalkini Upazila on Friday night, according to police and witnesses. When local boatmen and residents noticed, they began chasing the robbers, who fled down the river towards Shariatpur's Tentulia in speedboats and trawlers.
News of the robbery attempt quickly spread on social media, and mosque loudspeakers were used to alert residents. Residents of the Dadpur Natun Hat area of Shariatpur's Angaria Union and other nearby areas along both banks of the Kirtinasha River subsequently joined the chase.
Within moments, hundreds of people surrounded the robbers. During the confrontation, the robbers threw improvised explosives and fired indiscriminately, injuring several people.
“Faced with resistance from locals, the robbers abandoned their speedboat and attempted to escape. Seven of them were captured, beaten by the mob, and later handed over to the Palong Model Police Station,” said Nazrul.
“We’re following the instructions included by the doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after they returned here from DMCH,” said Khandokar Rashed, a physician at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital.
“As of now, police have filed two cases over the incident of attempted robbery and mob beating. Three people have already died. A murder case will be filed. We’re preparing for that,” said OC Helal Uddin of Palong Model Police Station.
Two of the bodies have been kept at the morgue in Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. The third one is at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Police will take the necessary steps while following the required legal process, Helal said.
