A Chhatra Dal leader of Dhaka University has been "stabbed" to death while riding a motorbike through Suhrawardy Udyan near the campus.

A student of the university’s Institute of Education and Research, the victim, Shahriar Alam Sammo, 25, was reportedly attacked late Tuesday night. He was a resident student from the 2018-19 session at the Sir AF Rahman Hall.

Shahriar was the literary and publications secretary of the BNP’s student faction, according to his friends.

Shahbagh Police Station chief Khalid Mansur confirmed the incident and said an investigation is under way.

His friends rescued him in a bleeding state and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around midnight, where doctors declared him dead, DMCH police camp chief Md Faruk confirmed.

The officer mentioned Shahriar’s right leg bore a wound from a sharp weapon, and his body was kept at the morgue for autopsy.

Shahriar’s classmate, Ashraful Islam Rafi, said Shahriar hailed from Sirajganj’s Ullapara Upazila.

Another one of his friends, Ababil Ahmed Bishal said the incident occurred near the Mukto Mancha of Suhrawardy Udyan where Shahriar’s motorbike collided with another, leading to a heated argument that turned into a scuffle.

At one point, the other rider stabbed him in the right thigh with a sharp weapon and fled. Shahriar was then rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead, Ababil added.

Associate Professor Quazi Mahfujul Hoque Supan, provost of Sir AF Rahman Hall, said that he was stabbed to death and was bleeding profusely, which led to his death.

Shahriar’s classmates gathered at DMCH after hearing the news of his death.

Later, a protest march was also taken out on the campus to protest the incident. Around 2am, a section of the protesters went to the vice-chancellor’s residence and raised slogans.
