A case has been filed against a local BNP leader over the assault of a journalist at the Shaheed Minar in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar, while he was on his duty.

Sub-Inspector Mohammad Nure Alam of Nasirnagar Police Station said Abdullah Al Mahmud, Upazila correspondent for the Daily Kalbela and NTV, filed the case on Saturday evening.

The lawsuit names Upazila BNP General Secretary Bashir Uddin and four others, while an additional 20-25 unidentified individuals have also been accused.

According to Mahmud, he went to the Shaheed Minar on Thursday night to cover news during the first hour of Feb 21.

At that time, leaders and activists of the BNP’s student and youth wings allegedly began beating up two National Citizens' Committee activists, accusing them of being members of the Chhatra League.

When Mahmud tried to capture the incident on his mobile phone, Bashir and his supporters allegedly snatched his phone and physically assaulted him.

The journalist suffered serious injuries to his face, eyes, head, neck, and other parts of his body.

Later, police rescued him and sent him to the Nasirnagar Upazila Health Complex.

SI Nure Alam said, “A police operation is under way to arrest those involved in the incident.”
