Police say a man has been killed in a gunfight between two rival factions over “territorial dominance” in a Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya.

The incident took place at B-21 Block of 8 East camp after 9pm on Saturday, said Mohammad Fazle Rabbi, acting commander of the 8th Armed Police Battalion, or APBn.

The dead has been identified as Mohammad Rafiq, 33, from the camp.

Additional Superintendent of Police Md Kaisar Rizvi Quraishi of the 8th APBn told bdnews24.com that two suspects were detained by local residents and handed over to police.

“Initial findings suggest the gunfight broke out over control of the area. The injured man was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

“We have also learned that the victim had ‘mental disorders’.”

The officer added that questioning the two detainees could reveal further details about the incident.

This marks the second killing in a Rohingya camp in the past week.

On Wednesday, a group of armed criminals murdered Mohammad Nur, the head majhi (community leader) of the camp.
