The Bangladesh Nari Mukti Kendra has called on four female advisors to resign if they are unable to take effective action against the growing cases of repression of women across Bangladesh.

At a women’s rally outside the National Press Club on Saturday, the organisation’s President Seema Datta said: “If you truly want to work for women and cannot do anything while in power, then take to the streets.

“Resign from your positions and admit that you have failed. At least then, we can say that you were unable to succeed within the existing system,” she added.

Seema criticised Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury for his inaction.

She said, “What are you doing while in power? We see nothing but mockery in your statements every day.”

“Just as ministers in the previous government blamed the people with a grin, this administration is doing the same.

“We strongly condemn this and demand the removal of the home advisor.”

She expressed hope that the government, which came to power through a mass uprising, would deliver justice for the murders and rapes that had been sought in the past.

“While we had hoped for justice, incidents of violence against women continue every day. Government officials claim that allies of the Awami League are responsible.

“If that’s the case, then what are law-enforcing agencies doing? We demand an answer from the government,” Seema said.

Sushmita Roy Supti, the publicity and publication secretary of Nari Mukti Kendra, said the number of child marriages and young pregnant mothers is rising due to the misuse of special provisions.

"Working women are unable to keep their children close. Therefore, every organisation must establish daycare centres and ensure equal wages for both men and women," she added.

She referred to the recent incidents of violence against women.

“We no longer want to make demands; we want the law to be implemented fairly and strictly. We want to see if the perpetrators of the Magura child rape case have been punished.
