The Bangladesh Railway has begun the sale of advance train tickets for homebound travellers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Sales kicked off at 8am on Friday with tickets for the journey on Mar 24 made available.
Rezaul Karim, senior information officer at the Ministry of Railways told bdnews24.com: “The advance ticket sales began today by providing tickets for the journey on Mar 24. This year, the tickets will only be sold online.”
According to the railway’s decision, tickets for Mar 24 are available on Friday, Mar 14.
Tickets for Mar 25 will be available Mar 15, Mar 26 on Mar 16, Mar 27 on Mar 17, Mar 28 on Mar 18, Mar 29 on Mar 19, and Mar 30 on Mar 20.
Since the Eid tickets are only sold online this year, the usual crowd of ticket buyers was absent from Dhaka’s Kamalapur Railway Station.
Instead, the station saw its regular crowds. No one inquired about Eid train tickets at the counters.
“The sale of Eid travel tickets began at 8:00am. Tickets for the western region will be sold in the first half of the day. For the eastern region, tickets will be available after 2pm,” Kamalapur Station Master Md Anwar Hossain told bdnews24.com.
The railway opted to sell the tickets in two shifts in the morning and the afternoon to decrease the pressure on servers.
Station Master Anwar said, “All tickets are available online and we have disseminated this information beforehand. Hence, buyers aren’t coming to the station anymore. Even if someone comes, the counter staff tell them to buy tickets online.”
The Bangladesh Railway launched the online sale of 100 percent of Eid tickets during Eid-ul-Fitr in 2023.
This year the rail authorities have decided to operate five special trains to ease Eid travel.
