A couple in Brahmanbaria's Ashuganj have allegedly died by double suicide as poverty drove them into mental agony, according to the family and police.
The incident occurred at Kurer Paar area in the Upazila on Sunday night, said Billal Hossain, chief of Ashuganj Police Station.
The dead were identified as Nanu Mia's son Alamin, 25, and his wife Jarina Begum, 20, daughter of Noapara's Idrees Mia.
Alamin, an autorickshaw driver, had a son and a daughter.
Jarina's brother Anwar Hossain said that his sister and brother-in-law were under great mental stress due to poverty and other domestic issues in the family. Alamin had sold off an easybike which he bought and was making the payment in installments. The couple fought a lot over the issue.
“Failures led to sadness, anger and helplessness, driving them to kill themselves together," Anwar said.
According to Anwar, the couple tried to kill themselves by consuming pesticide on Sunday night. They were rescued around 10 pm and taken to the Brahmanbaria General Hospital's emergency department. Jarina died there. Alamin then died around 1am.
OC Billal said, "Poverty and mental stress led to this incident of suicide. We have sent police to the hospital and the couples' bodies have been kept in the morgue."
