A student at Barishal’s Sher-E-Bangla Medical College has died three days after allegedly attempting suicide by injecting himself.
Sajib Baroi, a student of the 50th batch and a native of Agailjhara Upazila in Barishal, passed away on Saturday afternoon while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka, confirmed college Principal Dr Faizul Bashar.
According to college authorities and fellow students, Sajib had been suffering from severe mental distress, reportedly triggered by academic setbacks and personal issues.
“Emotionally overwhelmed, Sajib attempted to take his own life by injecting himself,” said Dr Faizul.
“He was initially treated in the ICU here, but as his condition failed to improve, he was transferred to Dhaka, where he died this afternoon.”
Mohammad Azim, a 53rd batch student, said Sajib had been struggling to keep up with his peers. While most of his batchmates were completing their internships, Sajib was still in his third year.
“He had been mentally unwell due to academic pressure and falling behind,” Azim said.
Sajib reportedly attempted suicide on Thursday night while in a state of depression.
Azim said Sajib had left behind a note, which read:
“I’m tired of fighting with myself. I need a bit of rest. Please forgive me. I couldn’t repay all the love you showed me.”
