The top court has scrapped the 13-year jail term of BNP leader Amanullah Aman in a case filed over the accumulation of illicit wealth.

The Supreme Court’s Appellate Division also dismissed the 3-year prison sentence given to his wife Sabera Aman and acquitted her of charges.

The Appellate Division bench, led by acting Chief Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, delivered the verdict on Wednesday.

The couple’s counsel Mahbub Uddin Khokon said Aman and his wife were “freed” from the corruption charges through the verdict.

“With the ruling, no legal bar prevents Aman from contesting parliamentary elections," he said.

On Mar 6, 2007, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) initiated a case against Aman and his wife at Kafrul Police Station on charges of amassing wealth beyond known sources of income and asset concealment.

On Jun 21 of the same year, a special judge's court sentenced the former state minister to 13 years in prison and Sabera to three years.

The couple appealed the sentence to the High Court, which acquitted them on Aug 16, 2010.

When the ACC challenged the ruling, the Appellate Division overturned the High Court verdict and ordered the appeal to be re-heard based on merit.

On May 30, 2023, the High Court upheld Aman's 13-year prison sentence and Sabera's three-year sentence.

Aman then filed an appeal against the High Court verdict on Sept 12, 2023, which led to Wednesday’s acquittal.
